The Eastern Province consists of chapters in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Although small in a geographic area, its members have been at the forefront of the silhouettes-history national Silhouettes serving as national officers. From Washington, DC, Mary Foley served as national president. Marian Tyrance served as national first vice president and Louise Young as national treasurer. From Baltimore, Maryland, Elva Edwards served as national president and national historian. Carolyn Tutman of Baltimore has served as national secretary. Joyce Fountaine from Richmond, Virginia, is the immediate past national president. The music to the national Silhouette hymn was composed by Gwendolyn Eichelberger of Washington, DC.
The National Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. became official in August 1947 at the Los Angeles Conclave of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. In 1980, the Silhouettes were officially recognized as an auxiliary to the Fraternity.
The Eastern Province Silhouettes (EPS) of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was organized in 1966. Silhouette Elva Edwards, Baltimore (MD) Silhouettes Chapter served as the 1st EPS Coordinator.
The purposes of this organization are to:
First place winner for donating to the Kappa Foundation and named the Province with the most financial members.
It is with great humility and pride that I continue to serve as the Eastern Province Silhouettes President. I’m a proud member of the Baltimore (MD) Silhouettes Chapter where I served as Chapter President for six (6) years. I also served as the Chapter delegate for the Eastern Province Silhouettes Council and the National Silhouettes Meetings.
I have also served on several National Silhouettes Committees including the National Bylaws Committee and was elected in 2017 as a member of the National Nominating Committee. I served as Sergeant at Arms, and the Nominations Committee Chair with the Eastern Province Silhouettes and, in 2021, was appointed co-chair for the Province Silhouettes Council Planning Committee.
Silhouettes, as we prepare for 2024, I encourage each of you to continue serving your respective chapter, and community, and supporting our husbands of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. While I realize how easy it can be to become complacent, let’s strive to help our respective chapters and the Eastern Province to continue thriving and shining.
I will always be grateful to the members of the Executive Board and each of you for your unwavering love, ideas, and support. Together we will succeed.
